The Davy block was purpose built in 2009 to house the Grove’s Performing Arts and links through to The McCarthy Theatre.
It consists of smaller performance spaces in the music recital room and drama studio, five classrooms including a keyboard room and computer room, a recording studio and 12 practice rooms. This variety of space ensures there are opportunities for pupils to pursue whatever performing art they choose.
The facility is always busy. During an average week there are around 25 rehearsals and extra-curricular activities, ranging from the Monday morning Brass group through to Wednesday’s coffee concert series and culminating in dance club and rock band after school on Friday.
The McCarthy Theatre provides an excellent multi-functional, flexible performance space for theatrical productions and musical events with seating for up to 230. Theatrical and musical productions are enhanced by excellent sound and professional lighting facilities operated from a purpose-built state-of-the-art technical studio. The Hastings-Long Gallery adjoins the McCarthy Theatre and offers a perfect location for pre-performance and interval drinks.
Leavers often note that the Davy block becomes a second home for our performers and one of the things they miss most when they leave Woodhouse Grove.
