We asked the newly appointed Head of Cricket, Mr Gurman Randhawa, a few questions about his cricket journey so far, and what he’s looking forward to most about his new role.

Where did your interest in Cricket come from?

My dad was the main reason I started playing cricket. I remember being as young as 5 years old and travelling around with him for weekend fixtures. He would play for a local club in Huddersfield and just being around a social cricket environment from quite a young age definitely sparked my interest in the game which obviously grew and grew!

What made you want to coach cricket?

I think there are a  few reasons why I became interested in being a cricket coach, I feel that as a coach you can have such a positive effect on a person in many different ways that being mentally or physically. Through my own playing experiences and learning from some of the best coaches in the world, I wanted to pass on that knowledge and spark the interest of young cricketers. Also, the feeling of helping people achieve their goals at varying levels is amazing. Building close relationships with all the players and families creates such a great atmosphere and is something I’m really looking forward to doing at Woodhouse Grove.

What was it that interested you about coaching cricket here at Woodhouse Grove School?

The history and prestige of the school speaks for itself, and being a part of the WGS community really excites me. I was able to come in over the Easter half term and work with some of the young cricketers here and seeing their enthusiasm and willingness to learn made my choice to go for the role as Head of Cricket a really easy one.

The facilities at the school are also second to none so putting all this together I feel as though I can help all cricketers here progress in whatever way they want to, whether that be initially getting into cricket and developing an interest in the game or helping our representative players reach the next level.

What are you most looking forward to about your new role as Head of Cricket here at WGS?

I’m really looking forward to building good relationships with everybody in The Grove community and seeing the cricket programme enhance year on year.

Seeing the various Boys & Girls teams grow and improve will be satisfying and it will be great to celebrate the individual successes of students along the way.

Do you have any sporting inspirations?

I would say my sporting inspiration is current England Cricketer Joe Root.

I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with Rooty on the academy and staff at Yorkshire CCC. Seeing his relentless work ethic and hunger to improve his game is something I think is a glowing example for any young cricketer looking to get to the highest level. He is also just a really humble person outside of the game which is the most important thing for me and something I will be looking to instil in all our players at WGS.

Thank you to Mr Gurman Randhawa for taking the time to answer our questions, we’re looking forward to seeing you here in September.
