Boarding Life | Woodhouse Grove School

A home from home

Living at The Grove provides the opportunity to be part of something even more special than attending only as a day pupil. Boarders benefit from the continued support and care that surrounds all our pupils during the school day with the added extra of having it 24/7!

Our boarding accommodation is split into two family-style houses, each with their own unique feel.

Brodwell House

Welcome to Brodwell, where I can assure you lots of fun, learning and adventures await! The basic layout includes a ground floor communal lounge, separate games and pool rooms, kitchenettes and chill-out area on each floor, which means there is plenty of space to socialise as well as have space for yourself.

I have been a houseparent for 6 years and live at school with my wife, Mrs Dobson (Psychology & Games) and our cockapoo, Ernie. Sport is my passion and besides leading boys boarding and teaching PE, I run the basketball team and assist in Duke of Edinburgh. I am also a keen traveller and love learning about other people’s culture and trying new languages and cuisine.

We have approximately 25-30 boarders at any one time in Brodwell as quite a few of our day boys choose to stay over to attend early morning sport fixtures, avoid the commute or just to spend time with their friends. This doesn’t mean weekends are any quieter though as our core family of boarders get chance to explore the local sights and attractions as a mixed group with the girls, as well have some independent time to prep for the week ahead.

Miller House

A warm welcome to Miller House. As houseparent of Miller, my role is to ensure all the girls in my care achieve their best and grow independently whilst feeling safe and secure in a home from home environment.

Miller is the original boarding house for the school and perfectly situated on the top floor of the main building, giving the girls easy access to all the school facilities and outstanding views of the grounds. There is a main lounge, separate snug, chill-out area and two kitchens.

I have been a houseparent for over 20 years and live on site with my husband, Dominic and our two children, Noah and Darcie. I thoroughly enjoy the responsibility, variety and camaraderie it brings being both a PE teacher in school and a houseparent. We are all very sporty and love the outdoors so can often be seen out and about as a family.

On evenings there is always plenty to take part in, from whole school co-curricular clubs to boarding-specific activities. On weekends, there is usually at least one organised excursion or event plus the chance to explore the local area and towns as we are extremely well connected with a train station opposite and a hypermarket and cafes a short walk away.

I am certainly proud to lead such a caring boarding family where girls of all ages and nationalities are valued and have fun learning and socialising together.

Weekend Activities

At the weekend, boarders are also able to make their own plans with friends, along with taking up opportunities to visit local amenities, events and clubs. Although there is only 1 Exeat Weekend a year, boarders can arrange leave to visit parents or friends via their Houseparent. Visitors and overseas parents are always welcome at The Grove. You and your children will find plenty to do and see within and around our school.

Each term concludes with a celebratory event referred to as a “Grove Weekend”. The Christmas Ball, Easter Banquet and Summer Silly Olympics are all large-scale formal events where boarders come together with other invited members of our community to celebrate boarding life. Fair rides, chocolate fountains, disco’s, BBQs and fireworks are regular features at Grove Weekends!

We ensure that there is plenty to choose from every weekend for our boarders to enjoy. These activities are arranged to give breadth and choice and there is no additional cost. If boarders wish to join a Sunday Trip, there will be a cost associated with participating and they will be made aware of this on the sign-up sheet.

A Day in The Life of a Grove Boarder

Life at Woodhouse Grove is varied and dynamic and every day is different. However, a basic routine exists within Grove Boarding to give students some helpful structure and maintain physical and emotional wellbeing.
