Location

Despite being located less than five miles from the centre of Leeds and Bradford and only five minutes from Leeds/Bradford airport, neither is visible – or audible. Screened by woods, the school’s safe 70 acre campus sits in the broad Aire Valley in Yorkshire and enjoys a lovely rural setting which belies its convenient urban situation.

A countryside setting - but with convenient city links

• Leeds/Bradford airport is within 3 miles
• Manchester Airport is within a 1 hour drive
• Apperley Bridge has its own railway station just across the road from school, with direct access to Leeds City Centre.

Woodhouse Grove is a very special place to board. This aerial footage of the school demonstrates just how special our corner of the world really is…

Accommodation

There are two boarding houses at The Grove; Brodwell houses our male boarders and Miller House is home to the girls.

A caring and secure environment is maintained by resident House staff and each boarding pupil has their own personal House Tutor who they meet with regularly to discuss academic progress and co-curricular involvement and to whom they are able to turn for guidance and support. House Parents are responsible for all other aspects of a boarder’s life. Tutors and House Parents work together to ensure every student flourishes under our care. Students receive all the individual attention they need whilst being given enough space to mature rapidly, form close friendships, take on responsibilities and discover new talents.

Each of the Houses has WiFi and modern homely comforts and has a unique character whilst sharing key values.

It's such a privilege to be part of the Grove boarding community, and I love the variety it brings, from weekend trips to impromptu fashion shows, quiet chill time to baking competitions, there is always something going on.

The best part of my job is spending time with the girls in Miller. They never fail to make me laugh until my stomach hurts, and I feel their sadness just as deeply when they're down. Sharing life with them is a real privilege—and being able to call that my job truly feels like a dream.

Poppy Winks, Senior Boarding Tutor

What I love about working in Boarding at the Grove is the energy, the teamwork and the genuine connections.  It can be challenging at times, but the friendships between students and the staff makes it all worthwhile.

Academic Excellence

At Woodhouse Grove, academic standards remain consistently high. All boarders have access to supervised prep (homework) in the evenings and at weekends and the school also runs a large range of academic support clinics during and after the school day. Over 90% of our students got into their chosen university/apprenticeship. However, we are well aware that academic qualifications alone are not sufficient to guarantee success in the wider world. Maturity, confidence, versatility, self-discipline and self-motivation are all qualities needed to achieve full potential and boarding at Woodhouse Grove can provide a unique environment in which to develop these qualities.

Co-curricular Activities

Boarders at the Grove are constantly provided with stimulating and challenging experiences. They may choose to play and practise music; research in the library; use the latest multi-media facilities; rehearse a play for public performance; play Sport for the School or local team; participate in one of our many exchange programmes; join a theatre or concert trip; work out in the wonderful fitness suite; swim lengths in the Jubilee pool or just relax and drink hot chocolate with friends in the House kitchens. At the weekend, we organise a full and varied entertainment programme for our boarders, including activities such as go-karting and paintballing, trips to nearby cities such as Manchester and York and visits to theme parks, the seaside and water sports centres.

Woodhouse Grove attracts boarders from all over the world; from Spain to Australia! The different cultures that make up our boarding community are very much celebrated. To demonstrate to our boarders how much they are valued and to help them feel at home at The Grove, we host bi-weekly international cuisine nights, enabling pupils to sample cuisine from the countries of their fellow boarders. We also host a wide range of cultural events and celebrations throughout the year.

Boarding Principles, Aims & Philosophy

The Woodhouse Grove boarding community celebrates traditional values, while embracing a tolerance and understanding of the world around us. We work hard to cultivate an environment that is respectful and honourable and where we take responsibility for each other’s wellbeing.

A caring family community

When a student joins Woodhouse Grove as a boarder, they become a member of a caring family community, enjoying the many benefits of living at a school with a home from home ethos.

Academic qualifications alone are not sufficient to guarantee success in the wider world. Maturity, confidence, versatility, self-discipline and self-motivation are all qualities needed to achieve their full potential and boarding at Woodhouse Grove can provide a unique environment in which to develop these qualities. Our boarders are confident and motivated, study hard, are comfortable expressing their opinions, take an active part in School life and have a keen interest in the wider world.

Boarders make friendships here that will last a lifetime. Our network of past pupils spans the globe and provides all Grovians with a valuable set of connections for the rest of their lives.
