Our climate resilience improvement efforts have allowed us to reduce our gas consumption and heating use.
To improve climate resilience and reduce energy use, the school has invested in a Building Management System (BMS), allowing heating plant rooms across the site to be monitored and controlled remotely. Improved visibility and the installation of new temperature sensors have helped optimise performance, resulting in a 30% reduction in gas consumption.
Further efficiency measures include ensuring all electric heating systems are fitted with appropriate timers so they operate only when required, preventing unnecessary energy use. A rolling programme of pipework lagging in plant rooms is also underway, reducing heat loss in unoccupied or low‑priority spaces.
The school has made significant upgrades to its electrical infrastructure. In 2019, around 90% of lighting was upgraded to LED, dramatically cutting electricity consumption. Windows across the site have also been upgraded to double glazing, improving thermal comfort and reducing heat loss.
Additional technical improvements include moving pumps from three‑phase to single‑phase systems during plant room upgrades, improving efficiency and resilience. Within the swimming pool facilities, a pool cover is used to reduce heat loss and evaporation when the pool is not in use, alongside the installation of inverters on pool pumps and air handling units to better match energy use to demand.
Together, these measures help the school adapt to changing climate conditions while reducing energy consumption, costs and environmental impact.
