Kadiatou Commended and Mrs Sharpe Won!
As one of only 15 Key Stage 5 National Finalists in the Poetry by Heart championship, Kadiatou, Year 12 travelled down to London to participate in a celebratory weekend. Sunday was full of Shakespeare activities from the ‘As You like It’ workshop in the Sam Wanamaker theatre, to an amazing performance of King Lear where the ‘groundling’ view was incredible – even if it meant standing for three hours!
On Monday, the finalists returned to The Globe to take to the stage themselves and perform their poetry recitals. Kadia spoke with emotive fluency and captivated the audience with her rendition of Robert Burn’s poem ‘Ae Fond Kiss’. Despite missing out on the winning prize, Kadia was commended by the organiser and co-founder of the competition who described her performance as “one of my favourites of the day.” Click on the photo below to listen to her recital.
The celebrations ended on a high with recitals and a question and answer session with Yorkshire’s very own Simon Armitage, the Poet Laureate.
Mrs Sharpe was one of only 11 national finalists in the staff competition and wowed judges with her recital of Passing the Time by Caroline Bird, winning the staff competition.
We are so proud of student and staff and they thoroughly deserve this national recognition.
