This term, three of our senior students have been part of incredible sporting achievements.
Morgan Crew (Year 13) has signed a three-year professional contract with Exeter Chiefs, joining the Premiership club as a back-row forward directly from Sixth Form, while studying at Exeter University alongside it. His rugby achievements didn’t start here however; Morgan represented Wales in the Under-18 Six Nations last year.
“It’s a huge milestone and a very special moment for me after all the hard work I’ve put in. The school has played a big part in helping me reach this point, rugby is a major part of the school’s identity, and that environment meant I was always supported and encouraged while balancing my studies and rugby commitments. I’d particularly like to thank Mr Bedford and Mr Hicks, whose coaching, guidance and belief in me have helped me throughout my journey.“
Charley Clark-Taylor (Year 12) travelled to Tarragona last week to compete in the European Triathlon Championships in the 16-19 women’s category, coming home with a silver medal. What makes her story particularly Grovian is where it started:
“I first became interested in triathlon when school introduced me to a summer camp in Year 8.”
A few years later, she’s racing against athletes from across the continent. “I particularly enjoyed riding in a group with girls from Spain, Italy and Malta,” she said, which tells you something about the level she’s now operating at.
Matty Hands (Year 12) has earned selection for the GB Under-18 squad ahead of the European Padel Championships in Portugal, and earlier this year took the title at the BPT Academy Tournament. Padel is the fastest-growing sport in the world right now, and Matty is already competing at its highest junior level.
“I can’t wait to gain some valuable experience from competing against some of the best players in the world.”
Head of Sport Mr Barr noted that Matty has represented the school across football, cricket, golf and tennis — making his rise through padel all the more impressive, “to see him progress to such a high level is particularly fantastic.”
Well done to all three of our senior students for these achievements, we are incredibly proud!
