Going Green

We are dedicated to improving our sustainability through eco-conscious efforts targeting energy use.

In summer 2022, Woodhouse Grove installed a 221.13 kWp solar photovoltaic system on the Sports Hall roof. This major investment was originally forecast to supply 11% of the school’s electricity, but during the summer months it has reduced electricity demand by up to 30%. The system paid for itself within three years and has already delivered significant environmental benefits — the equivalent of planting 340 trees and reducing carbon emissions by 611.74 tonnes of CO₂.

Building on the success of this installation, solar panels have since been installed across several other sites:

• Headmaster’s House – 8.1 kWp array with 6 kWh battery storage, reducing summer electricity consumption by 60%
• Rawdon Meadows Pavilion – 12.2 kWp array, reducing summer consumption by 87%
• Bronte House Sports Hall – 24.03 kWp array

To support the transition to low‑carbon transport, the school has also installed two electric vehicle charging points, enabling staff, students and families to confidently move towards electric vehicles.

In addition, the Grounds Department has replaced its fuel-powered vehicle with a second-hand electric buggy, improving air quality, reducing noise, and cutting carbon emissions across the school site. When conditions allow, the buggy can also be recharged using solar energy. For summer 2026, we have further strengthened our commitment to sustainability by acquiring an electric mower, strimmer, and hedge cutter. These additions will help reduce carbon emissions even further while also minimising noise pollution across the grounds.
