We were delighted to welcome Old Grovian Dominic Leclerc (90–97) back to The Grove for a full day of inspiration, reflection and creativity.

Dominic, screen director of Sex Education, Skins and Shameless, returned to school for a packed programme celebrating his journey and sharing his expertise with students.

The day began with a full school tour led by Sixth Form Old Grovian Ambassadors Macey and Ted, followed by a podcast recording with Mrs Corry, Head of Development & Alumni Relations in the Davy Building studio for the school’s podcast, Grovian Voices. Lunch in the Main Hall included a surprise reunion with Dominic’s former English teacher and former Deputy Head, David Wood.

The afternoon featured an inspiring Director Workshop with Years 10- 12 Drama students, before a Career Talk and Q&A in the McCarthy Theatre for students in Years 9-12, with Mrs Habergham, Head of Drama, leading the discussion. During his talk, Dom spoke about the many avenues within the arts, from directing and acting to production design, lighting and sound. He encouraged students with a passion for the arts to “see what your heart and soul tells you, and follow that, boldly, with confidence, joy and determination.” Dom also spoke candidly about the challenges of the industry, emphasising that it is highly competitive and demands hard work, commitment and resilience, with learning how to cope with rejection being a crucial part of the journey.

During the tour and visit to the Performing Arts Department, Mrs Habergham presented Dominic with the Arts Colours Book, a special moment of reminiscence as he rediscovered his own Colours entry and signature. Mr Wood also showed Dom a framed photograph on the McCarthy Theatre wall, capturing a moment from his school days when he performed as the Archbishop of Canterbury in the WGS production of Was He Anyone?

A truly memorable visit and an inspiring reminder of where a Grovian journey can lead.
