Never mind Gryffindor!
Never mind Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw – it’s Atkinson, Findlay, Towlson, Southerns, Stephenson and Vinter where the real action happens!
As soon as our new Year 7s arrive at The Grove, they are placed into one of our six Houses. Although this doesn’t happen with the help of a magic Sorting Hat, we do make sure that if pupils have an older sibling at the school, or a parent who is an Old Grovian, they are placed in the same House.
In fact, a pupil’s House acts rather like an extended family and facilitates friendships across year groups – which has a huge effect on the culture of the school. Whilst a pupil’s form or set may change as they progress through the school, their House membership will always remain a constant. The long-established House system at The Grove is a unique and key part of our school community and adds something very special to life here.
Each House has, at its head, a Housemaster or Housemistress. Pupils have the opportunity to put themselves forward for official House positions; House Prefects and Heads of House / Deputies – and in this way are able to leave their mark on the school.
Fortnightly House Assemblies provide the perfect opportunity for pupils to gather with other members of their House and there are a multitude of House Events and House Competitions throughout the year in which all pupils are encouraged to participate – with everyone’s eyes on the ultimate prize; the House Trophy!
However, the beauty of The Grove’s House system is that it is about so much more than just winning; it is about providing every pupil with the opportunity to showcase their talents, step out of their comfort zone, try something new and grow into the best version of themselves.
The extraordinarily wide range of House activities on offer means that there really is something for everyone; Baking, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cross Country, Debating, Football, Music, Netball, Science and Swimming – to name but a few. Plus, there’s the ever-popular and highly competitive House Quiz and, of course, our summer Sports Day – the pinnacle of the annual House Competition.
Pupils gain House Points for participation in House events, working towards Silver, Gold and Platinum House Awards. But the rewards of being part of a House community are so much more: the sense of camaraderie; the moments of perseverance and pride; and the spirit of comradeship.
Atkinson, Findlay, Towlson, Southerns, Stephenson, and Vinter—six unique Houses, each with its own identity, but together forming a thriving school community where every pupil has a place to belong and the opportunity to shine.
I am an individual, yet I am part of something incredible.
I am Grovian.
