John Cockshott – Obituary Notice

It is with deep regret that I inform members of the School community of the death of Mr John Cockshott.

John has had an enduring relationship with the Grove over many years and was a pupil at the school between 1971 and 1978. In September 1983, John returned to the Grove as an Assistant Master to teach Craft, P.E. and Games and remained at the school until the end of his teaching career; supporting pupils, from across the generations, whilst also carrying out a variety roles and responsibilities.

During his time on the teaching staff, John lived on-site and was a strong presence and support for both Stephenson House and the school’s rugby sides, in addition to him carrying out his teaching role in the Design and Technology department.  A good number of our current pupils will have known John and have been taught by him.

John and Gina’s children, Charles and Katy, attended Woodhouse Grove, leaving in 2010 and 2012 respectively and Gina, who is also a teacher, has taught at Brontë House and The Grove.

John became ill last year and passed away peacefully on Wednesday 12 September 2018, surrounded by his close family.

As a School community, we offer our sincere condolences. On a personal note, having known him in his prime, I feel desperately sad that John’s life has been cut short at such a young age.

It is a fact that John displayed tremendous bravery and dignity throughout his illness – and that is exactly what we all must do now. Whatever the hurt, loss or upset some of us may be feeling, it is nothing compared to what Gina, Charles and Katy are going through.

Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s family at this very difficult time.
