Did You Catch That?

The Grove is well known for providing an outstanding all-round education. With state-of-the-art facilities, exceptional teaching and and an excellent standard of diverse co-curricular opportunities, we are a school that ticks all the boxes.

However, it is the little extras that transform The Grove from a great school to a very special community in which to learn, work and live. Things that are not that well known - and that, individually, may not be important to everyone here - but that make the Grove experience extra special for some. The "Did You Catch That?" gems of Grove life that, together, raise the bar and make us different from the rest.

Teacher Learning

The best teachers never stop learning – and The Grove’s academic staff are second to none. Dr Anna Ingham, Head of Teaching and Learning explains:
“Academic staff meet regularly to reflect on the latest teaching and learning research and spend time planning and embedding the ideas into their daily teaching. In a recent before-school session, teachers collaborated on developing new strategies that support students with a particular focus on challenging the more able.”

Grove Golf

Time to tee off – Golf has arrived at The Grove!

This new addition to the Senior Games Programme has seen a small group of golfers visit the Bradford Golf Club on Wednesday afternoons as their Games option.

Always keen for competition to improve our game, the school entered 4 teams into the Yorkshire Schools’ Golf Championship for the first time. One our teams qualified for the Yorkshire Final and the Individual Under 16 Stableford Competition was won by a Grovian!

While it is early days for Grove Golf, we are hoping to develop the provision further with fixtures against other schools who are also keen to expand their programmes.

Fore! Watch this space…

Food for Thought

With breakfast, lunch and dinner available to all pupils, The Grove has always been well known for the quality of its food. But we also have a number of snack options available to keep those hunger pangs at bay….

Serving options ranging from paninis to smoothies, Woody’s Café in the Sixth Form Centre provides brain food to our hard-working Years 12 and 13.

Two tuck shops – one in the Dining Hall and one in the Hastings-Long Gallery – provide pupils with a range of sweet and savoury treats at breaktime.

Meanwhile, The Cabin serves pupils and parents from 4pm onwards – and at the weekend, when there are home fixtures.

An appetite for success? Grove grub has got you covered!

Robot Club

Did you know that our Year 7 pupils have over 40 different co-curricular clubs to choose from – and Robot Club has some of the most effusive participants…

“Being part of Robot Club has definitely opened my mind to possibilities…to what I can do!”

Robot Club is a very special part of The Grove’s outstanding Co-curricular Programme and its success is due to the enthusiasm of Mr Gill and his team of sixth form helpers.  Our fencing club is also going from strength to strength and the school now enters numerous fencing competitions over the school year.

Emma Nulty, Deputy Head confirms:

“A really special feature of our co-curricular programme is not just the variety but also the staff that run the activities. They’re incredibly passionate and engaged. We’re not just teachers inside the classroom; we go above and beyond to develop pupils outside the classroom.”

Global Bridge

Woodhouse Grove is one of the first schools in England to offer each of our pupils a unique, digital Globalbridge profile.

Students can not only upload their academic achievements to the Globalbridge platform, but also a biography, aspirations, photos, sound bites, electronic documents and even video footage showing sporting highlights, drama productions and musical performances. They can then share their Globalbridge profile with any university or employer, showcasing all their talents, skills and qualifications – helping them stand out in a competitive field.

Better still…Grovians have access to the Globalbridge platform for life – and so can use it as an ongoing record of experiences and achievements, evidencing the development of skills for future life and work.

As our Headmaster often says, “It is not just what you know – it is what you can do with what you know.”

I am more than just academic.

I am Grovian.

The Grove Awards

The Grove Award was introduced in September 2021 in order to provide recognition and reward for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who undertake a wide variety of activities. It encourages them to try new co-curricular clubs and prepares them for what will be required for the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Year 10, particularly getting used to uploading evidence and building an online portfolio.

To gain the Grove Award, students must complete 5 challenges across at least 3 categories: Performing Arts, Sport, Bone et Fidelis, STEM and Other. Challenges may be completed in school or out of school.

Students gaining the award have undertaken a wide variety of activities. These have included 10 hours of litter-picking, communicating with a pen friend in a language other than English, learning a musical instrument, taking part in horse-riding competitions, volunteering as tour guides for the school open mornings as well as participation in the full range of clubs, sports and concerts/plays that take place in school.

The number of students gaining their Grove Award has steadily increased since its launch with 37 recipients in the first year, 66 in the second and this total looks likely to be surpassed this year with 44 badges and certificates having already been presented.

Green Grove

Did you know that at Woodhouse Grove School we have a group of staff and students who are dedicated to helping the environment?

Green Grove focuses on different projects that help benefit our local community. The most recent project was the planting of 15 apple trees across our beautiful grounds. These fruit trees will blossom in the future and provide an important nectar source for pollinators. They will also produce fresh and delicious apples for you staff and students!
