Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
The Equality & Diversity Group was started in Sept 2018 by Mr. Cadman and Mrs. Vernon to help promote Equality & Diversity through assemblies, displays and the highlighting of big events (e.g. Pride, Black History Month). The idea was to help create an environment in which all members of the WGS community understand the importance of treating one another with mutual respect, dignity and tolerance.
This group is driven by the pupils and their ideas and over the past few years our students have been involved in delivering assemblies, running events, and adding to the knowledge and understanding surrounding protected characteristics. The Group has grown over the years to now be known as the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team.
At The Grove we aim to ensure that all pupils and staff feel accepted, valued, included, and have access to the same opportunities, regardless of their background, beliefs or characteristics. This inclusivity within the school fosters a sense of belonging and respect among students, and allows unique perspectives, experiences and talents that each person brings to enrich pupils personal and educational development.
By encouraging understanding and acceptance of different cultures, religions and identities, we cultivate empathy and open-mindedness among our pupils. This not only helps to prevent discrimination and prejudice but also prepares students to navigate an increasingly diverse world with respect and compassion. Embracing equality and diversity in education is a powerful way to instill values of fairness, inclusivity and social responsibility in the next generation of leaders and citizens.
The Grove recognises that by championing equality and diversity, it can create a positive and inclusive learning environment where all individuals feel valued and respected. Therefore, our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion group have been working hard brainstorming, organising and planning The Grove’s first Culture week.
‘I’m Alaina and I am part of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion group in Woodhouse Grove. We are a large group with over 15 students, and we all work together, with our teachers, to make our school as inclusive as it can be. One of the great ideas we have been working on recently is a culture week! This will include The Grove appreciating all cultures as students embrace their own national countries. We are looking forward to this event and many more to come!’ Alaina- Year 13 EDI Member
The pupils took time to carefully select activities and learning materials throughout the week that will allow our school to appreciate all the different cultures within our community. They then presented their plans to the Senior Leadership Team and the process of officially planning the week began! As a community we are excited to celebrate Culture Week 22nd April – 25th April.
