Experimenting With Enthusiasm – a behind the scenes look at Science at The Grove

I have worked as a science technician at The Grove for a year and a half and during this time I have loved every aspect of my job. I have played a key role in practical science through every aspect of student progression – from engaging in Open Mornings with potential new cohorts joining Year 7 at The Grove, following through to KS3, KS4 and eventually A-Level. This engagement ignites the spark in young minds that will potentially build the scientists of the future.

What I love most about my role is being able to involve students in the practical aspect of science by providing equipment and chemicals that enable practical investigations. Investigations such as how the heart and lungs work inside the body, the chemistry that is involved in fireworks and glow sticks as well as a little sprinkle of magic and testing student reaction speed. This provides a fun, hands on learning experience when students participate in science subjects and build on their scientific skills, expertise and knowledge that they then go on to apply in further education.

The excitement is clearly visible on students’ faces when they hear that they will be doing a practical in their science class. This exact excitement is what lays the foundation of students wanting to pursue a career in science. Open mornings are a fantastic way to showcase the practical, hands-on and fun side to science subjects and demonstrate how science plays a major role in every aspect of life.
