Sunny side up! The Grove goes solar!

With the serious issue of global warming in mind, not to mention increasing fuel prices, the team at Woodhouse Grove decided to put our Grovian Values of being Enterprising & Resourceful into practice….and  installed a whopping 546 solar panels on our sports hall roof! Covering an area of just under 1km2., the panels, installed by Wigan based company Perfect Sense Energy, will generate 184,809kWh of energy in the first year – powering 10-15% of the school site. This will have a significant impact on the school’s energy bills – not to mention, its carbon footprint.

Headmaster, James Lockwood commented:

At Woodhouse Grove we take environmental responsibility and sustainability seriously and our solar panel project demonstrates this. We are hoping to add more panels around the school site as soon as our local grid can accommodate this. Hopefully in the not-so-distant future, the Yorkshire sunshine will be powering even more of the school site!

And our Sustainability & Energy Officer, Michelle Howard, said:

I was thrilled to first get the role as Sustainability and Energy Officer at Woodhouse Grove School and then to have the support to proceed with a solar panel installation within my first year really displays the school’s commitment to sustainability. In the UK this summer we were all witness to the impact of climate change with extreme heatwaves and drought, it is undeniable now. It is heartening to have the ability to generate our own clean, renewable energy at school. And, with ever increasing electricity costs, it makes financial sense too. I hope it will help encourage our wider school community to consider what they may be able to do at home. This is only phase 1 for us at school, now onto phase 2!
