Ailsa Ferrie, Zoe Heaton and James Waller (Y13) attended the Mock United Nations Conference on Wednesday 21 September, the conference was held to celebrate the UN’s 70th Anniversary and it was held on the International Day of Peace.
The event was held at Methodist Central Hall in Westminster, London and was in the same building that the original 1946 conference was held. The purpose of the conference was to consider how relevant the 1946 resolutions had been at the time, and how they fared today, regarding two key issues – atomic power and the question of refugees.
Allocated as Belgium, we debated on the issues surrounding the sharing of data on nuclear power and how nuclear power could be policed. We voted on two amendments, and successfully lobbied for one of them.
We then further debated on how the original UN resolutions on refugees were too vague and wished for clarity on how refugees should be integrated within countries. We looked at how cultures were very different from one country to another and that respecting individual rights was paramount. We successfully lobbied for change and contributed to a clause being struck from the original resolution
Whist in London, the PM, Theresa May was in New York at UN HQ debating very similar issues.
It was the first time that the school had been involved with this conference, and we hope that this is the beginning of our future involvement with this annual event.
